The Story of the First Funko Pop Ever Made

It’s hard to imagine a Pop Culture Phenomenon without the cult classic first Funko Pop ever made. After an incredible journey, this vinyl toy started as an unassuming bobblehead before becoming one of the most recognizable collectible items around the world.

From movie stars and sports heroes to beloved characters from comics or video games, there is simply no limit to what kind of figures can be found in a Funko Pop! While it’s impossible to put into words all the reasons these toys are so special, let’s take a look at how it all began…

The History Of Funko Pops

Discover the fascinating story of Funko, the toy company that started in a Snohomish home and skyrocketed to success. It all began in 1998 when toy collector Mike Becker founded Funko after his search for an affordable coin bank came up empty. Undeterred, Becker secured licensing rights from a Big Boy franchise and created his line of coin banks. Though they didn’t sell as expected and the franchise faced bankruptcy, Funko persevered. Their breakthrough came with the introduction of Austin Powers bobbleheads, selling an impressive 80,000 units. From there, Funko expanded its offerings to include iconic characters like the Grinch, Tony the Tiger, and the Honeybee from Cheerios.

In 2005, Funko reached new heights when Chief Creative Officer Brian Mariotti took over the reins. He transformed the company, moving it to Lynnwood, Washington, and adding an incredible range of licensed products.

In 2011, Funko introduced the immensely popular Pop! Vinyl line of figurines. By 2012, they had generated over $20 million in sales.

In 2013, Funko sought new funding and was acquired by Fundamental Capital, a private equity firm. ACON Investments, LLC later took over the company but ensured continuity by retaining the existing staff and leadership.

By 2016, Funko had outgrown its original headquarters and made plans for a bigger and better space in downtown Everett, complete with a retail store.

Their expansion continued in 2017 with the acquisition of British toymaker Underground Toys and the opening of a flagship store and headquarters in downtown Everett. However, their entry into the stock market in 2017 faced setbacks, with shares falling by 40% and raising only $125 million.

In 2019, Funko expanded its portfolio by acquiring the popular fashion accessories line, Loungefly. They also opened their second storefront in Hollywood, Los Angeles, boasting an impressive 40,000 square feet of space featuring life-size statues and movie “sets”.

As Funko continued to thrive, it acquired Mondo, a high-end pop culture company, in June 2022, solidifying its position in the industry.

However, not everything is always smooth sailing. In March 2023, Funko faced a challenge with excess inventory and limited warehouse capacity, leading to the disposal of old stock.

8 First Funko Pops Ever Made

#1 Wacky Wobblers Bob’s Big Boy Bobblehead – the First Funko Pop Ever Made

Year created: 1998

Introducing the Wacky Wobblers Bob’s Big Boy Bobblehead, the oldest product from Funko that is a must-have for any collector. With only 480 pieces ever made, this iconic bobblehead may not have catapulted Funko to fame, but it remains an integral part of the brand’s history.

Bobbleheads have been around for over 150 years, with similar toys even described in Nikolai Gogol’s 1842 short story, The Overcoat. The Big Boy Bobblehead takes inspiration from the classic design of plaster cats with wagging heads.

The Big Boy Bobblehead is a beloved mascot of Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant. Featuring a charming chubby boy in red-and-white checkered overalls holding a double cheeseburger, this figurine became an instant hit. While the 1998 edition was produced in limited numbers, fear not! You can still find this delightful bobblehead in various online stores.

The Big Boy Bobblehead was born out of necessity. Unable to find an affordable Bob’s collectible, Funko Pop founder Mike Becker took matters into his own hands. He acquired the license to produce his version, thus giving birth to the Funko brand.

Nowadays, collectors eagerly seek out the 1998 edition of the Big Boy Bobblehead. Take advantage of reasonable prices offered by online sellers, and be the proud owner of a piece of Funko history. While it may not hold the highest value among collectors, its charm and significance make it a cherished addition to any collection.

#2 Austin Powers Bobbleheads

Year created: 2002

Step into the world of wobbly wonders with Austin Powers Bobbleheads! This incredible product took Funko Pop to new heights and solidified its place in the market. But how did it all begin?

It all started with a modest success. Mike Becker, the founder of Funko Pop, dipped his toes into the Bobblehead territory with the creation of Wacky Wobblers Bob’s Big Bobblehead. However, it wasn’t enough to sell out inventory or cover all the bills.

Everything changed when Becker decided to reach out to New Line Cinema. With a stroke of genius, he secured a license to produce Bobbleheads based on the hit 1997 film, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. The deal was struck for a mere $2,500, and Funko Pop was set to make its mark.

In 2002, Austin Powers Bobbleheads burst into the market, instantly capturing the attention of collectors. As a Funko collectible, these highly sought-after items can now be found on eBay, mainly through individual sellers offering secondhand pieces. Through this groundbreaking deal, Funko Pop shipped a staggering 10,000 units.

But did you know that before 2010, Bobbleheads were the sole focus of Funko Pop? They were the driving force behind the company until they expanded their product line to include vinyl action figures.

Fast forward to today, Austin Powers bobbleheads remain a prized possession for collectors. Luckily, they are relatively easy to find and purchase, especially through individual sellers on eBay.
